WEAVE Series

The idea for the weave series was prompted by the material technique known as steam bending. Most often used in the process of wood ship building, in this case it is exploited to generate the surface pattern naturally. As each piece is laminated together, strips bend up and down according to their individual grain, deflecting to generate a pattern of openings in the surface that is both spontaneous and unique to each piece.

The result is an uneven surface that blisters and peels away, generating an unpredictable texture that appears both natural and man made. This process allows material and technique to dictate the final form of the bench, rescinding artistic license, and generating a genuinely organic form.
The construction process must remain somewhat predictable however, as select strips are kept straight, a continuous lamination from end to end lends structural integrity to the wood seat overall. The glue-laminated slab spans between two folded stainless steel flat bars that form the legs, a simple and elegant support that complements the wood.

304 Alloy Stainless Steel Flat Bar, break folded into shape, forms the legs, this material is structurally sound and durable for all weather conditions.  The surface of the bench is constructed from one of two materials, stained and finished Red Oak or Yellow Birch, these woods are both a good density for structural purposes and respond well to steam bending and forming, making them ideal for this piece.
